Jennie Adkins
Jennie grew up in the Piedmont of North Carolina, but spent many
summers at Atlantic Beach with her
family. She attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel
Hill and received her BA in Education. After graduation she immediately
moved to the coast of South Carolina and taught for several years.
In 1976 she went to work with Neuse Mental Health Center in New
Bern as house parent and co-director of the Windjammer program for
troubled children. During this time Jennie became an avid sailor
and was a member of the board of directors of Blackbeard Sailing
Club. She returned to teaching and has continued in both New Bern
and Pamlico County Schools. After 32 years working for the state
Jennie retired and began her second career as an associate broker
with Sail/Loft Realty.
Jennie and her husband Bill bought a cottage on the water at Minnesott
14 years ago. With their daughter Ann, they spent summers and weekends
going back and forth from Minnesott to New Bern where they lived.
When their daughter graduated from high school, they sold their
home and their cottage, and moved to Minnesott permanently. She
enjoys the quiet lifestyle, her community, and the beauty of the
water. She now enjoys spending time on the water fishing and boating.
After their daughter attended UNC she returned to Pamlico County,
married and has been living in Oriental. Jennie enjoys having her
home and getting to spoil her new grandson.
Jennie was formerly a member of the Junior League in Charleston S.C., a member
of the Durham Junior League and a member of the Junior Women's League
of New Bern.
